Help End the Global Arms Trade
by formaldehyde on Feb.08, 2012, under Uncategorized
Amnesty International are campaigning for tighter arms regulations around the world. Below is their statement -
Every day at least 1,500 people die from armed violence. Countless more are maimed, raped, repressed or forced from their homes by human rights abusers armed with guns, bombs and tanks.
These weapons are acquired through a global trade subject to less regulation than that in bananas, dinosaur bones and postage stamps.
Email UK party leaders: tell them to support action on arms
When you think that every year two bullets are produced for every person on the planet, it is quite clear that the arms trade is out of control. There has never been a greater need to tighten regulations on the arms trade than now.
That’s why we’re supporting Amnesty’s crucial campaign to ensure the world agrees to a bulletproof Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) this July. I hope you too will do all you can to ensure the UK plays its part in making this happen.
As a first step, we need UK party leaders to stand up and declare their support for a strong treaty. Send them a message about the Arms Trade Treaty now
The Arms Trade Treaty could be one of the most important pieces of law ever to be secured. A successful Treaty could quite literally save lives. It could stop bloody conflicts, and prevent millions of women, men and children from being terrorised from their homes by stopping the supply of weapons to those that would use them to commit atrocities.
It’s up to all of us to seize this opportunity. Make sure our party leaders support action on arms”

Food Sovereignty Week

Food Sovereignty Week — Starts 24th October : Special Interest Stories daily
This week we will be bringing you a selection of talks from London and Brighton about food sovereignty
For the first time in human history, over a billion people have been officially classified as living in hunger. This record total is not a consequence of poor global harvests or natural disasters. Hunger on this scale is the result of a global economy in which hundreds of millions of small farmers, fisherfolk, pastoralists and indigenous people have faced ruin through the hijacking of the global food system by large agribusiness and food retailers.
Together with its partners in Brazil, Sri Lanka and Mozambique, and in the wider movement of La Via Campesina, War on Want is committed to the alternative model of ‘food sovereignty’, an approach to the food crisis that prioritises people’s right to food, agro-ecology and a global food system free of corporate control.
